Representative Doris Matsui, serving California’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress since 2005, expressed her concerns regarding social security reforms and trade policies proposed by prominent figures such as Elon Musk and former President Donald Trump. Her series of tweets on April 3 and 4, 2025, highlight issues she perceives in these areas.

On April 3, 2025, Matsui voiced her criticism regarding comments made by Elon Musk about Social Security, labeling it a "Ponzi scheme," and former President Donald Trump's claims about millions of deceased Americans supposedly receiving benefits. Matsui contended, "They’re lying—so they can cut off checks and rip benefits from Americans. But #SocialSecurity programs impact all of us."

In another tweet from the same day, Matsui addressed Trump's trade policies, asserting, "No one wins in a trade war... Prices of everyday goods are going to go up. Businesses will suffer. Retirement accounts will suffer." According to Matsui, these policies are "not nuanced," but rather "just costly."

On April 4, 2025, Matsui reiterated her concerns about economic pressures on American families in a later statement: "Everyday Americans are already struggling with the high cost of groceries, clothing and shoes, cell phones, and other essentials. Trump’s response? Raise the price of all of the above." She clearly states her view that "Trump’s #tariffs are a tax on American families’ hard-earned cash."
