Doris Matsui, a U.S. Congresswoman representing California's 7th district since 2005, has recently expressed her views on various issues through a series of tweets. Matsui, who succeeded Bob Matsui in Congress and is an alumna of the University of California, Berkeley, addressed topics ranging from women's rights to scientific integrity.
On March 8, 2025, Matsui highlighted the significance of International Women's Day by acknowledging the progress women have achieved globally. She criticized the Trump Administration for attempting to reverse these advancements. "Yet the Trump Administration is trying to roll back that progress," she stated, emphasizing the need for continued advocacy against threats to reproductive freedom and economic rights.
In another tweet dated March 10, 2025, Matsui expressed concern over President Trump's executive orders affecting Afghan allies. She noted that many Afghans had made significant sacrifices during the NATO mission in Afghanistan but are now left vulnerable under Taliban rule due to recent policy changes. "Thousands of Afghans sacrificed a great deal to support our service members," she remarked.
Later on March 10, 2025, Matsui addressed what she perceives as attacks on science. She underscored the importance of ensuring that scientists' voices are heard within agencies responsible for critical healthcare decisions. Her proposed Scientific EXPERT Act aims to integrate rare disease experts with the FDA to enhance decision-making processes. "We are in an unprecedented moment of attacks on science," she commented.
