The City of Sacramento Office of Arts + Culture, in partnership with the Franklin Neighborhood Development Corporation, is hosting a free community mural paint day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 8.
The event is located at the underpass on 21st Ave. between Franklin Blvd. and 34th St. This free, family-friendly event will have a food truck, community resources and an opportunity to help paint a mural.
“The mural project’s objective is to create a more welcoming environment along a key walking route between South Oak Park, North City Farms, and the Franklin District, and to and from Ethel Phillips Elementary School,” said Art in Public Places Manager Donald Gensler. “The project will help reconnect these neighborhoods that were cut off by the construction of Highway 99 in the 1960s.”
For the community paint day event, the artists have developed sections of the mural as a paint-by-number design so that all community members can participate in painting the mural on site. All supplies will be provided. Local artists Jaya King and Uli Smith will be onsite to help.
The new mural is the first phase of the 21st Avenue Beautification Project which is supported by Clean California grant funding from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
Parking is available in the lot behind La Superior Supermarket or in the staff lot at Ethel Phillips Elementary School.
