City of Sacramento issued the following announcement on Dec 1.
Nearly 250 individual artists, arts and culture nonprofits and creative businesses have been selected to receive reimbursement grants from the second round of funding from the City of Sacramento’s Creative Economy Recovery program.
The program is designed to financially assist an array of creative-sector players that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are grateful we were able to provide financial support to the local creative economy during this time of critical need,” said Megan Van Voorhis, Cultural & Creative Economy Manager. “The Creative Economy Recovery program is one of the most robust arts and culture funding initiatives the City has ever executed. Thank you to our Mayor and Council for their leadership and to staff for executing the program to uplift and support our cultural and creative community.”
In total, $14.2 million has been awarded to 361 artists, nonprofit organizations, creative businesses and partners through the Creative Economy Recovery program. The program is funded by the $89 million the City received from the federal CARES Act.
The program is executed by the City’s Office of Arts and Culture, and awardees were scored and selected by panel review from the City’s Arts Culture and Creative Economy Commission (ACCE). Scores were based on a proof of impact and loss from the COVID-19 pandemic, contribution to the creative economy and alignment with the ACCE cultural equity statement.
“I love knowing that the Creative Economy Recovery program is investing in building up our city,” said grant recipient Brandon Greathouse, owner of Greathouse of Dance. “I may be a small business, but I can see the large impact that it is having on the youth and young adults in the city. The future will be in the hands of the youth one day, and thanks to the City, I’ll be able to do my part on equipping them to make the future brighter.”
“With the support of the CARES Act grant, we will be able to continue on with providing opportunities for youth through our music programs,” said grant recipient John Hamilton, founder and executive director of Dept. of Sound Sacramento. “Now I can ensure I am keeping students and our community safe by creating and supporting technology-enabled distance-learning-ready educational resources for public school institutions.”
The Creative Economy Recovery efforts included two rounds of reimbursement grants and funded other programs such as Sacramento.Shop an online marketplace for local creatives spearheaded by local nonprofit The Atrium.
An additional $915,200 is supporting the “Sacramento Healthy HeART and Mind Collaborative” a partnership of the City of Sacramento’s Office of Arts & Culture and Sacramento County Office of Education. The program brings art and mental health programming to 27 local schools to support children during the pandemic.
