The California Assembly Republicans expressed their concern over a report from NBC Nightly News comparing different strategies on COVID-19 responses between California and Florida.
They said “this NBC Nightly News report raises serious doubts about Gavin Newsom's extreme, never-ending lockdown strategy. We need to have a real discussion about these aggressive closures going forward.”
Gabe Gutierrez reported that California and Florida are now showing the same progress after these two states implemented different approaches.
Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom has instigated stricter measures while Fla. Gov. Ron DeSantis had more relaxed controls and made a faster push to reopen businesses.
Comparing the hospitalization incidents, about a month ago Newsom’s state had 56 hospitalizations per 100,000 residents while it was 35 for DeSantis'. Now, according to the report, it’s 24 and 22 per 100,000 residents for California and Florida respectively.
COVID-19 cases registered at 8,621 per 100,000 people in California and 8,370 per 100,000 in Florida.
Dr. Kavita Patel, NBC Nightly News medical contributor, said this could be attributed to people who are still moving about and crowds forming in California while there are fewer persons traveling in Florida.
She also told NBC Nightly News that Florida gave vaccine access to more people.
