The City of Sacramento, in partnership with the Sacramento Tree Foundation Thursday broke ground on Sacramento’s first cherry blossom park – the Hanami Line – a mixture of nature, art and culture along the Sacramento River.
The Sacramento Tree Foundation, a local nonprofit organization, also celebrated the successful fundraising of $7.6 million to build the Hanami Line.
“Located along the Sacramento River at Robert T. Matsui Waterfront Park, this park is a perfect location to host annual cherry blossom festivals, drawing visitors and providing a year-round gathering place,” said Sacramento Tree Foundation Executive Director Jessica Sanders. “The Hanami Line will combine Sacramento’s love of trees with the rich cultural heritage of this region and a view of the Sacramento River.”
The project is funded through the Sacramento Tree Foundation, City of Sacramento, Caltrans Clean California Grant, commitments from UC Davis Health and philanthropic gifts from individuals.
Features of the park will include 100 “Pink Flair” cherry blossoms, public art, native and drought tolerant landscaping, lighting, and ample seating with an area meant to host festivals.
The park serves as a connection point between the new Railyards developments, Old Sacramento and the I Street Bridge along the Sacramento River.
The Hanami Line is projected to open in 2024.
