The City of Sacramento renewed its Prohousing Designation with the California Department of Housing and Community Development, earning the highest score in the state for policies that accelerate housing production, according to a June 2 announcement.
The Prohousing Designation Program offers incentives to cities and counties through additional points or preference when scoring competitive housing, community development, and infrastructure programs. Mayor Kevin McCarty said, “Sacramento is committed to building more housing faster. This Prohousing Designation is an acknowledgement of the hard work we have put in to be a pro-housing leader with initiatives like Streamline Sacramento.” McCarty also said, “Our dedication is paying off; Sacramento has consistently been one of the highest housing producers per capita among large California cities since 2020.”
To qualify for a Prohousing Designation, jurisdictions must achieve at least 30 points on their application. The City of Sacramento received a score of 108, the highest among the 74 jurisdictions currently holding this designation. The designation lasts three years and requires reapplication for renewal.
Jurisdictions with this designation become eligible for extra state funding through the Prohousing Incentive Program. This program supports both affordable housing production and preservation efforts.
Sacramento’s renewal reflects its ongoing commitment to streamlining development processes and maintaining financially feasible policies for new housing projects. The city was also noted as being first in California to receive a Prohousing Designation in 2022 and was first to apply for renewal.
