The City of Sacramento announced on May 18 that it is recognizing National Public Works Week, which runs from May 17 to May 23, by celebrating the employees who maintain critical infrastructure and deliver essential services for residents.
National Public Works Week is sponsored annually by the American Public Works Association and highlights the contributions of public works professionals across North America. This year’s theme is “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community,” focusing on the role public works employees play in supporting safe and connected communities.
Public Works Director Matt Eierman said, “Public works employees are the backbone of our city’s infrastructure and essential services. Their dedication, professionalism and commitment to serving the community are what keep Sacramento safe, connected and moving forward. They are the people residents count on every day — often without realizing it — and National Public Works Week is an important opportunity to recognize the tremendous impact they have on our community.”
As part of this year’s celebration, two City of Sacramento employees received recognition from the American Public Works Association Sacramento Chapter. Rhea Salvador was awarded Professional Manager of the Year in Administrative Management for her collaborative leadership style and expertise in strategic planning. Jose Sanchez received Professional Manager of the Year in the Public Right of Way category for his operational expertise and commitment to mentoring staff.
The department oversees maintenance for thousands of lane miles of roadway, more than 100,000 city trees, freeway undercrossings, bike trails as well as transportation safety improvements and emergency response operations across Sacramento. The awards highlight individual achievements within a team that supports neighborhood enhancement projects and sustainability initiatives throughout the city.
