Rep. Doris Matsui, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 7th District since 2005, recently shared her concerns on social media regarding various political issues affecting her constituents. Matsui has been vocal about potential cuts to Medicaid and other funding initiatives that could impact vulnerable populations.
On May 13, 2025, Rep. Matsui expressed her opposition to Republican proposals aimed at reducing Medicaid benefits. She stated that such measures would adversely affect “seniors in nursing homes, cancer patients, people with disabilities, and kids.” She highlighted the case of Sam, a child with Down syndrome, autism, and a speech disorder who relies on Medicaid for his in-home care needs “Republicans want to gut #Medicaid—and who pays the price? Seniors in nursing homes…”.
The following day, on May 14, she raised concerns over the potential withdrawal of funds from La Familia Counseling Center in her district. The center received $18.5 million for community development projects including a resilience center and energy upgrades for homes. Matsui criticized attempts by Trump and Republicans to redirect this funding towards tax breaks for wealthy individuals “In my district, La Familia Counseling Center received $18.5 million…”.
Later that same day, Rep. Matsui reported ongoing efforts against proposed Republican budget cuts during an extended legislative session exceeding eight hours. She thanked advocates supporting these efforts and committed to continue advocating for their causes throughout the night “We’re over 8 hours into this markup – and we are still fighting back hard…”.
Doris Matsui was born in Poston, Arizona in 1944 and currently resides in Sacramento. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a BA in 1966.
