Rep. Doris Matsui, who represents California’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, used her social media platform in mid-October 2025 to criticize Republican lawmakers and President Trump amid a federal government shutdown. Her posts focused on the impacts of the shutdown, decisions regarding foreign aid, and the consequences for American constituents.
On October 14, Matsui commented on the administration’s priorities, stating, “In the midst of a shutdown, President Trump has decided Argentina matters more than the American people. Giving $20 billion to another country while you fire your own workforce, raise health care costs, and leave American farmers struggling is not ‘America First’.”
The following day, Matsui addressed the state of congressional negotiations and the conduct of her colleagues. On October 15, she wrote, “House Democrats are here in Washington—united and ready to work. House Republicans? Nowhere to be found. While their constituents face drastic premium hikes, they’ve shut the government down and gone on vacation. That’s not governing, it’s abandonment. Republicans need to stop”.
Later that same day, she highlighted actions by her party in response to health care issues, stating, “Today, House Democrats gathered on the Capitol steps to highlight how the Republican assault on health care is hurting hardworking Americans. Republicans know the damage being done—and they’re choosing to ignore their constituents. Instead of fixing the problems they’ve caused,”.
Doris Matsui has served in Congress since 2005 after succeeding Bob Matsui and is currently one of the senior representatives from California. Born in Poston, Arizona in 1944, Matsui is 78 years old and resides in Sacramento. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, which she earned in 1966.
