Rep. Doris Matsui, who has represented California’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress since 2005, posted a series of statements on social media on October 1, 2025, criticizing recent actions by former President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans regarding federal employment and government shutdowns.
In a post published at 01:22 UTC, Matsui wrote: “Donald Trump isn’t threatening mass firings of federal employees because he thinks it’s necessary. His default is to hurt hardworking Americans when he doesn’t get his way. I stand with our federal workers against these cruel attacks.”
Later that morning, at 04:16 UTC, she commented on the ongoing government shutdown debate: “Republicans have chosen to shut the government down instead of serving the people who elected them. My full statement below:”
By the afternoon of October 1, Matsui further criticized her Republican colleagues’ approach to health care policy in another post: “Republicans would rather shut the government down than lower health care costs. Cancel the cuts. Lower the costs. Save health care. It’s that simple.”
Doris Matsui has served as a member of Congress since succeeding Bob Matsui in 2005 and currently resides in Sacramento. She was born in Poston, Arizona in 1944 and holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
