Rep. Doris Matsui, who represents California’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, used her social media platform on January 15, 2026, to comment on recent developments involving federal immigration enforcement and healthcare funding.
On January 15, Matsui cited a report by the American Immigration Council regarding a sharp increase in detentions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She wrote, “The American Immigration Council reported a 2,450% increase in people detained by ICE with NO criminal record. They aren’t after criminals—they’re after anyone who doesn’t fit their racist definition of an American. Accountability is coming.”
Later that day, Matsui addressed former President Donald Trump’s response to criticism over ICE’s actions and the killing of Renee Nicole Good. In her post dated January 15, she stated, “Trump still won’t accept accountability for his own failures or the deadly ICE killing of Renee Nicole Good. Instead, he threatens scorched-earth retaliation against dissent. Minnesota needs ICE out and a real independent investigation, not more White House threats.”
In another tweet posted on the same date, Matsui highlighted her efforts alongside congressional colleagues to oppose cuts to federal addiction and mental health care programs. She wrote, “I co-led a letter with over 100 of my colleagues demanding the Trump Administration reverse their sudden and catastrophic $2 billion cut to federal addiction and mental health care programs. It worked, and those cuts have been reversed. We must keep up the pressure. Lives are at”
Doris Matsui has represented California’s 7th District since 2005 after succeeding Bob Matsui in Congress. She was born in Poston, Arizona in 1944 and currently resides in Sacramento. Matsui earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1966.
