Rep. Doris Matsui, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing California’s 7th district, shared a series of tweets on May 1, 2025, addressing key issues including air pollution and cultural heritage. Matsui, who succeeded Bob Matsui in 2005 and has lived in Sacramento, made statements regarding air pollution standards and the recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander contributions.
In a tweet posted early on May 1, Rep. Matsui expressed concern about efforts by the House GOP to modify California’s legal rights under the Clean Air Act. She stated, “.@HouseGOP are trying to strip California’s legal authority to set our own air pollution standards. For over 50 years, California has led the nation in reducing air pollution using its authority under the Clean Air Act.” Matsui referenced the state’s leadership in addressing air pollution over the past five decades.
Later that day, Matsui acknowledged the significant contributions of the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities to various sectors, stating, “The tremendous achievements of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders have propelled our country forward in arts, science, public service and beyond. During AANHPI Heritage Month, we celebrate our diverse tapestry of cultures.”
In another tweet dated May 1, Matsui emphasized the health impacts of air pollution, mentioning, “It shouldn’t be controversial to say that air pollution is dangerous. If you’re like me and you grew up in California, then you know the impacts of air pollution—including higher rates of cancer and respiratory conditions.” She questioned the attempts by the House GOP to undermine the state’s efforts in maintaining stricter air quality standards.
Additionally, Doris Matsui has been a member of Congress for nearly two decades after completing her education at the University of California, Berkeley, and was born in Arizona but now resides in Sacramento.
