Rep. Doris Matsui, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 7th district since 2005, has recently addressed issues related to federal authority over state elections, tribal sovereignty, and food assistance in a series of social media posts.
On November 3, 2025, Matsui commented on recent judicial actions regarding presidential influence over state elections. She stated, “The Constitution is clear; the President cannot impose his will on our state’s elections. This was nothing more than another unconstitutional attempt by the Trump administration to expand their power and control our elections. I am very happy to see that the courts have checked” (November 3, 2025).
Later that day, Matsui highlighted her participation in an event supporting tribal sovereignty with local leaders: “I was honored to stand with Jesus Tarango, Chairman of the Wilton Rancheria Tribe, and the City of Elk Grove to celebrate their sovereignty and raise the flag of Wilton Rancheria.
For generations, Tribal Nations have fought to be seen and heard in their own land.
Wilton” (November 3, 2025).
On November 4, she addressed concerns about federal food assistance programs under the Trump administration: “The Trump administration has made a deliberate choice to not feed the American people. Even when directed by a judge to do so—they’re still doing the bare minimum to support the most vulnerable Americans.
As crucial food assistance benefits hang in the balance, Americans are” (November 4, 2025).
Matsui has been active in Congress since replacing Bob Matsui in 2005. Born in Poston, Arizona in 1944 and currently residing in Sacramento at age 78, she holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley (1966). Her career has often focused on issues affecting her constituents and broader national policy debates.
