The City of Sacramento announced on Apr. 30 that residents can receive free water-saving mulch during the annual Mulch Mayhem event scheduled for May 16.

The event will be held at the City’s South Area Corporation Yard, located at 5730 24th St., from 8 a.m. to noon or while supplies last. The city said this initiative is part of ongoing efforts to help residents conserve water and maintain healthy landscapes during the summer months.

“Mulch is one of the easiest and most effective ways to help your landscape use less water,” said William Granger, the City’s water conservation coordinator. “It helps soil retain moisture, reduces evaporation and keeps plants healthier during Sacramento’s hot summers.”

Residents attending Mulch Mayhem are encouraged to bring a truck or trailer for staff assistance in loading mulch, or they may shovel their own mulch at a self-service station on site. There is a limit of one cubic yard per household.

The city has not provided additional background information about previous events or future plans related to this program.
