The City’s Community Development Department announced on May 21 that it is now conducting building inspections for qualifying projects virtually using VuSpex software. This new approach aims to make the inspection process more efficient for both customers and inspectors.
The initiative allows contractors and homeowners to schedule a virtual inspection time if their project meets certain criteria. Any device with a camera and internet connection can be used for these inspections. Eligible permits include minor HVAC and water heater installations, solar projects, electric vehicle chargers, and optional residential re-roofing.
Chuck Clark, the City’s Chief Building Official, said, “This tool has been helpful in enhancing our streamlining efforts since offering virtual inspections cuts out the drive time it takes for inspectors to get to physical locations. This allows for simple permitting inspections to be done quickly, which allows inspectors in the field to dedicate time to more complex projects.”
According to the City, this software helps customers save time by eliminating scheduling delays that can occur in the field. Since late 2025 when virtual inspections began, over 3,500 such inspections have been completed. Inspectors rotate between performing virtual checks from the office and visiting sites in person as needed.
The launch of Streamline Sacramento in 2025 aimed at increasing housing production, reducing construction costs, and improving development approvals. The addition of virtual inspections supports these goals and was highlighted during a year-end recap presented to City Council on Feb. 24.
